As a financial advisor, I’ve seen all sorts of people throw away money on bills every month. It’s a frustrating thing to witness because most people don’t realize they have the power to negotiate their bills and save themselves a significant amount of money. That’s why I’ve put together these top tips for bill negotiation.
1. Research Your Options
Before going into a negotiation, gather as much information as possible. Look up the rates of other service providers and compare them to the rates you’re paying. If you can show that you have a better offer elsewhere, you’re more likely to receive a discount or better rate from your current provider.
2. Be Polite, Friendly and Confident
Negotiation is a conversation, and it’s important to approach it with a positive attitude. Speak politely and assert your bargaining power with confidence. Customer service representatives are more likely to work with someone who is respectful, as opposed to someone who is angry or aggressive.
3. Find the Right Person to Speak With
It’s important to speak with someone who has the authority to make decisions about your account. Don’t waste your time talking to a customer service representative who can’t give you what you want. Instead, ask to speak with a supervisor or manager who has the power to authorize discounts or other concessions.
4. Use Loyalty as Leverage
If you’ve been a customer for a long time, use that to your advantage. Let the customer service representative know how long you’ve been a customer and how much you’ve spent with the company. Show that you’re a loyal customer who deserves to be rewarded with a discount or better rate.
5. Be Prepared to Walk Away
If the company won’t meet your demands, don’t be afraid to walk away. Sometimes, the threat of losing a customer is enough to make a company reconsider their position. Make sure you have researched other providers ahead of time so you’re prepared to switch if necessary.
While negotiation can be intimidating, it’s important to remember that you have the power as a consumer. By doing your research, approaching negotiations with a positive attitude, and using your leverage, you can save yourself money on bills every month.
